Every computer uses virtual memory to extend the amount of available RAM by writing physical memory to disks through a process called paging. Windows vista writes 1,843 MB of RAM to the disk as a paging file from where the operating system is able to access it from the disk when it need. This paging file is named as pagefile.sys when it writes to disk drives. Vista is able to create a paging file automatically for the drive that contains the operating system. Therefore, Vista can automatically manage virtual memory. Windows vista manages virtual memory as large as the total physical memory installed on your computer. This makes that paging files do not become fragmented that may decrease system performance.

  • File System Conversion: Most of the legacy Windows operating system comes with FAT (File Allocation Table) file system. Sometimes while converting the file system, from FAT to NTFS we may format the drive or partition and forget to take the backup. In those scenarios, data would be deleted or lost
  • Virus or malware attack: When there are viruses present in the hard disk of your computer, most of the applications would not run smoothly, and the performance of your computer would be affected. In such scenarios, you may format the hard disk drive and sometimes reinstall the operating system if the system files are infected by virus, resulting in loss of data
